Chapel Hill Bright and Modern Kitchen

This Chapel Hill kitchen and dining room remodel transformed a previously closed-off layout into a bright, modern, open-concept living space designed for both entertaining and everyday functionality.

This project was especially meaningful as the homeowner has been a longtime client of Paula’s, allowing the design team to thoughtfully evolve the space over time while tailoring every detail to the client’s lifestyle and needs.

Originally, a dividing wall and upper cabinetry separated the kitchen from the dining room, making the space feel smaller and limiting natural flow between the two areas. By removing the wall and reconfiguring the layout, Max Hugo Interiors created a more open and connected design while preserving the modern architectural character of the home.

Because the wall was load-bearing, a structural support beam needed to remain. Rather than treating it as an obstacle, Katherine designed a custom column wrap that seamlessly blends the wall color and rich cabinet finish, turning a necessary structural element into a clean, modern architectural feature that feels intentional within the overall design.

The homeowner, an avid baker, needed generous workspace for baking and entertaining. Expansive quartz countertops now provide ample prep space while maintaining a sleek, uncluttered aesthetic. To modernize the existing kitchen without a full cabinet replacement, we updated the original cabinetry with contemporary hardware and a streamlined modern faucet for a fresh, elevated look.

As part of the remodel, one of the original upper cabinets removed during demolition was thoughtfully repurposed into additional wall storage, maximizing functionality while reducing waste and preserving continuity within the design.

The dining room was fully refreshed with a new dining table and upholstered chairs from Canadel, adding warmth, texture, and comfort to the newly opened space. A modern area rug helps define the dining area while tying together the soft blue and neutral tones used throughout the home.

Large dining room windows brought in beautiful natural light, but also created significant afternoon sun exposure. To improve comfort and light control without sacrificing the home’s clean, contemporary style, we incorporated Hunter Douglas Skyline Panel-Track Blinds window treatments. Integrated Hunter Douglas PowerView Automation allows the shades to be programmed and controlled remotely — ideal for convenience, energy efficiency, and easy everyday living while the homeowner travels.

The final result is a sophisticated Chapel Hill kitchen remodel that feels brighter, larger, and more functional while blending modern design, custom architectural details, and practical everyday living.
